Cynt Marshall is retiring as CEO of the Dallas Mavericks at the end of the year, and then she will stay on for another year as a consultant in the organization where she is credited for a comprehensive overhaul of workplace policies.

The Zach Edey era began on Monday with preseason NBA action. The Memphis Grizzlies opened training camp play versus the Dallas Mavericks. And the big question was how the rookie big man would play. Edey dealt with a nagging ankle injury in summer league play this summer.

So high that the 7-foot-4 Zach Edey had to leave his feet to finish off a two-handed dunk on the alley-oop pass. And there it was. The first connection of what should be many alley-oops from Morant to Edey.

Jazian Gortman, a 21-year-old guard who spent time with the G League’s Overtime Elite last season, answered the call. Gortman finished the contest with 19 points on 4-7 3-point shooting and four steals.

There’s not a lot to glean from the NBA preseason as a whole. However, it is a proving ground for players on the cusp of a roster spot. Dallas Mavericks guard Jazian Gortman is such a player. Gortman didn’t take long to make an impact in Dallas’ preseason opener and made the most of his sparse minutes.
