For the first time since AT&T was dismantled into Baby Bells four decades ago, the US government is weighing the breakup of one of the world’s largest and most consequential monopolies: Google.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled in August that Google's search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to suppress competition and inhibit innovation. Mehta outlined a timeline for a trial on the proposed remedies set for next spring and is expected to issue a decision by August 2025.

The US government is considering seeking the break-up of the world's biggest search engine, Google, which it accuses of causing "pernicious harms" to Americans. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been considering so-called remedies since a landmark court ruling in August which found Google illegally crushed its competition in online search.

Judge James Donato, who presided over the Epic vs. Google lawsuit that declared Google to be operating an illegal monopoly with its Google Play Store on Android last year, issued a final ruling on Monday requiring the company's mobile operating system to open up to third-party app stores for three years.
