No. 2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak was ended by Tomas Machac in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals.

World number two Carlos Alcaraz suffers a shock defeat to an inspired Tomas Machac in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals.

Machac came into this quarter-final contest with confidence having been deadlocked with Alcaraz at one-set all in last month’s Davis Cup, only to have to retire because of cramps. “I knew that I had a chance (to win), but you never know, even with a set and 5-4 it’s still so far from winning the match,” Machac added.

World number two Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out of the Masters in straight sets by 33rd-ranked Tomas Machac, losing 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 on Thursday.

In his last match on September 30, 2024, Alcaraz won 7-5, 6-2 versus Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals of the China Open. In the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships (his last tournament), Machac was eliminated in the semifinals by No. 19-ranked Ugo Humbert, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6.
